City descritpion

The history of the port town of Alicante dates back to the third millennium BC with the oldest settlement situated south of the airport at the mouth of the Río Segura. The settlement La Fonteta was founded here by Phoenicians in the ninth century BC.  Legend has it that Hannibal unloaded his famous elephants in Alicante.

The main attraction of Alicante is Santa Bárbara Castle with its viewpoint created in the 13th century while the nearby city of Elche is famous for its palm tree gardens. Here you can find as many palm trees as inhabitants – about 200,000!
