„Pro Mundi Beneficio“ – for the benefit of the world. This is the motto of the Republic of Panama which underlines the importance of the Panama Canal. The channel is used by 14,000 ships per year. Without the channel, these ships would have been forced to take the time-consuming route around Cape Hoorn or through the Strait of Magellan.

Situated at the northern entrance of the Panama Canal, Colón is the second-largest free-trade area in the world after Hong Kong. The duty-free and shopping paradise was named after Christoph Columbus and has more than 200,000 inhabitants.
